Padres start series in Milwaukee

Baseball Betting Lines

08/20/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The surging San Diego Padres can put more ground between themselves and the National League pack tonight when they open a three-game weekend series with the host Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park.

Expected by many to be merely an also-ran in this year's pennant chase, the Padres burst from the gate in the spring and have maintained the momentum throughout - opening a six-game lead on the San Francisco Giants in the NL's West Division.

San Diego leads the Atlanta Braves by 2 1/2 games in the race for the league's best record as well and has won five straight games after completing a four- game sweep of the Chicago Cubs on Thursday at Wrigley Field.

Will Venable drove in two runs and Mat Latos tossed seven solid innings for the Padres, who won the series finale, 5-3.

Jerry Hairston Jr. and Ryan Ludwick each had an RBI for the Padres, who had never swept the Cubs in four games at Wrigley. San Diego did win a four-game series between the teams at Petco Park from May 5-8, 2006.

Latos (13-5) allowed two runs on five hits to improve to 8-1 over his last nine decisions. The right-hander also struck out a career-high 10 batters and walked one. Heath Bell recorded his 37th save of the season despite giving up a run in the ninth.

Lefty Wade LeBlanc, who turned 26 earlier this month, aims for a second career win against the Brewers and a third straight victory overall for the Padres.

The Louisiana native was 5-10 on the season after a 9-0 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Aug. 4, but has since bounced back with consecutive defeats of the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Giants.

He beat Milwaukee, 9-0, on April 29 in San Diego, allowing eight hits in 6 1/3 innings with no walks and six strikeouts.

LeBlanc is 4-5 in 10 road starts this season.

The Brewers will go with staff ace Yovani Gallardo, who'll try to beat the Padres for the second time in 2010. The 24-year-old Mexican-born righty allowed six hits and one run in seven innings while striking out 11 in a 2-1 win at Petco Park on May 1.

The victory was the third in a stretch of six straight for the 6-foot-2, 222- pounder, who won 13 games in 30 starts last season and reached 11 wins in 2010 with an 11-6 defeat of Houston on Aug. 8.

He is 5-4 in 11 home starts with a 3.62 ERA across 69 2/3 innings.

On Wednesday in St. Louis, Lorenzo Cain doubled, tripled, drove in one and scored twice to back 8 1/3 solid innings from Randy Wolf as the Brewers held on for a 3-2 win over the Cardinals and earned a sweep of a two-game set at Busch Stadium.

Alcides Escobar added a sacrifice fly and George Kottaras knocked in the other run for Milwaukee, which has won four of six. Escobar exited with a leg injury with two outs in the ninth.

Wolf (10-9) notched his third consecutive win after limiting the Cardinals to one run on three hits. The left-hander walked one and fanned four.

Ex-Padre Trevor Hoffman struck out Brendan Ryan with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the ninth to lock down the win. It was Hoffman's 598th career save, which extends an MLB record.

San Diego has won three of its four meetings with the Brewers this season.

MySportsbook.com: NBA Championship Odds

With the playoffs about two months away, the top two teams in the Western Conference are the clear cut leaders to win the NBA Championship. The Dallas Mavericks have the best record in the NBA (44-9) and have been absolutely scorching since the second week of the season.  What makes the Mavs’ record more impressive is the fact that they dropped their first four games of the season.  Currently they have won 17 out of their last 18 and are MySportsbook.com’s favorite (2-1) to win it all.  Right behind the Mavs are the Pacific leading Phoenix Suns (39-13).  Last season, the Suns lost in the Conference Finals to non-other then the Mavericks four games to two.  Of course the Suns were without center Amare Stoudemire who has is averaging 19.9 PPG and 9.5 RPG since coming back from his knee injury.  Unlike the Mavs, the Suns have struggled a bit lately having lost their last three and four out of their last seven.  Of course the main reason for their three straight loses is due to the absence of two time MVP Steve Nash, who is out with a shoulder injury.  Heads-up, the Mavs have beaten the Suns in both of their meetings this season.

In the Eastern Conference, the Pistons (32-19) are the favorites to win it all at 6-1. The addition of Chris Webber seems to have been a good move for the Pistons.  Since coming over from the 76ers, Webber has averaged 13.1 PPG and 7.3 RPG and the Pistons are 11-4.  Even though the defending champion Heat are currently on the playoff making cusp, they are the Eastern Conference team that is getting the most action to win it all (9-1).  The fact that Shaquille O’Neal is back in the starting lineup after missing 39 games probably has something to do with this.  No doubt, Shaq makes a difference when in the lineup as their winning six out of their last seven would indicate.
